Belgian architects Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh have completed a see-through church in Limburg, Belgium. The ten metre-high church is constructed from 100 stacked layers of weathered steel plates. Gaps between these plates allow visitors to see through the walls. Reading between the Lines can be read as a reflection on architectural themes such as scale, the ground plan etc., but the project also emphatically transcends the strictly architectural. After all, the church does not have a well-defined function and focuses on visual experience in itself (one could even consider it to be a line drawing in space). At the same time, the construction demonstrates that this experience is in effect a consequence of the design, since it explicitly refers to the various stages in its conception: the design drawing, the model… Apart from that, because the church does not fulfil its classical function, it can be read as a heritage related reflection on the present vacancy of churches in the area (and their potential artistic reuse). The Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims have and are building Jamat Khanas in the Western world since the migration of Ismailis from different parts of Africa and Asia.

Tempel van de Hemel, Beijing De Tempel van de Hemel is het symbool van de stad Beijing. Hier ging de keizer eens per jaar op de dag van de zonnewende naartoe om te bidden voor een goede oogst. Terwijl de lange stoet zich van de Verboden Stad naar de tempel verplaatste, mocht het gewone volk zich niet op straat vertonen.

St Mariä Himmelfahrt Ahaus Deze opvallende kerk werd al genoemd in 1400. Toen werd de kerk bij een brand verwoest en begon men met een nieuwe. Hiervan staat de 68 m hoge toren (1519) er nog. In 1863 is echter een groot deel van de kerk opnieuw in as gelegd. De nieuwbouw die we nu zien, dateert uit 1966. Het ontwerp, waarbij de oude toren behouden bleef, is van de architect Erwin Schiffer. De ramen in de nieuwbouw zijn van Prof. Dr. Georg Meistermann.

Rheine, klooster Bentlage Het voormalige klooster Bentlage is tussen 1463 en 1512 gesticht. Begin 16de eeuw leefden hier ongeveer 50 monniken. Vanaf 1803 kreeg het een wereldlijke bestemming en werd het het representatieve middelpunt van het hertogdom Rheina-Wolbeck. Het slot bleef familiebezit, totdat de stad Rheine het in 1978 kocht. Nu is het een plek waar kunst en cultuur hoog in het vaandel staan. Bovendien ligt het in een prachtige omgeving, met akkers, weide en bos.
